Background

Crystal Moon Product is a food processing organization that produces the best-quality food products ranging from spices, pickles, and ezzey to candies, cookies, honey, and others. Through this, the group aims to promote the welfare of many farmers and home-based workers by providing the farmers with access to markets and generating employment opportunities for the home-based workers, and developing their skills to help them earn a sustainable income. Located in Gelephu, Sarpang, Crystal Moon Product focuses on the food processing of locally grown, natural ingredients. The core competency of Crystal Moon Product lies in developing and producing an exclusive, high-end, and authentic range of products that resonate with the image of Bhutan (a country of happiness with clean and pristine environmental conditions). The organization distinguishes its products from others by providing impeccable after-sales services to the customers, use of natural raw materials, and providing products in different (market-friendly) sizes.

Crystal Moon Product was established in January 2013 and formally registered on the 12th day of the 11th month of the Bhutanese calendar of fire (corresponding to the date 19 October 2015). The organization initially had six members and focused on the production of pickles (15 varieties), gooseberry and wild apple candy, and mushroom ezzey.

Over the years, the number of members gradually increased in number. Today, the organization has 11 active teams who – through this opportunity – have been able to improve their living standards and be self-sufficient. All the active members are paid through a daily wage system. The organization also has a network of 14 aggregators across multiple dzongkhags (namely, Bumthang, Mongar, Paro, Pemagatshel, Phuntsholing, Samdrup Jongkhar, Samtse, Sarpang, Tashigang, Thimphu, Trongsa, Trashiyangtse, Tsherang, and Zhemgang) who collect the raw materials from farmers and deliver it to the processing unit, as per the requirement. Registered as a Cottage and Small Industry (CSI) enterprise under the Department of Cottage and Small Industry (DCSI), Ministry of Economic Affairs (MoEA), the organization aims to grow at an exponential rate to contribute towards import substitution of value-added food products.

Mission:

To produce and provide the best quality value-added food products to marts, hotels, and fast-food chains and contribute towards the achievement of import substitution. Crystal Moon Product is committed to keeping pace with the rapidly changing market trends and consumer behavior and to achieving the highest growth by coming up with innovative ideas and ensuring their implementation. The organization is socially driven and dedicated to strengthening the livelihoods of the farmer community and home-based workers in Bhutan by developing their capacities and providing them better opportunities to earn a sustainable income.

Objectives:

►    To process locally-grown, natural raw materials to produce best-quality value-added food products that are affordable;

►    To facilitate, promote and provide guidance to the home-based workers in Bhutan for the enhancement of their skills and the process, revive the traditional and cultural heritage of traditional art, skills, and design;

►    To provide opportunities/facilities to home-based women and youth workers to earn a sustainable income through the various activities of the Crystal Moon Product;

►    To facilitate, through participatory initiative, the marketing of the products developed and produced by home-based workers, thereby ensuring sustained, adequate and secured livelihood;

►    To provide a platform for product marketing and facilitate new product development and research; and

►    To generate awareness and develop the skills of home-based workers and help them to attain recognition in the market.
